For over 120 years, we have championed the businesses, organizations, and people that make Davis one of the most remarkable small cities in America.
The Davis Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1905, the same year that the University Farm (now UC Davis) was established. Local business leaders came together with a singular purpose: to lobby the state legislature to bring the university to Davis and transform a small agricultural crossroads into a thriving center of learning and commerce.
That founding vision succeeded beyond anyone's expectations. Today, Davis is a globally recognized university city of 67,000 residents, home to one of the top public research universities in the world, a vibrant downtown, and a quality of life that consistently ranks among the best in California.
Through two world wars, the growth of UC Davis from a farm school to a world-class research institution, the bicycle revolution, the environmental movement, and the rise of Davis as a hub for clean technology and innovation, the Chamber has been there. Connecting businesses, advocating for sound policy, and celebrating the community we all share.
In 1967, Davis became the first city in the United States to paint bike lanes on its streets. Today, the city boasts over 100 miles of bike lanes, 25 bike bridges, and a cycling culture unmatched anywhere in the country.
Bike City USAFounded in 1976 and celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026, the Davis Farmers Market was the first certified farmers market in California. Every Saturday, 90 vendors welcome more than 500,000 visitors throughout the year.
50th Anniversary in 2026In 1995, Davis built a $14,000 tunnel under a highway overpass to help toads safely cross the road. It became an international curiosity and a beloved symbol of the city's commitment to all living things, no matter how small.
Only in DavisSince 1984, Davis has been a declared nuclear-free zone, one of the first cities in the nation to pass such an ordinance. It reflects the city's long tradition of civic engagement and progressive environmental values.
Since 1984Built in the 1970s, Village Homes is a pioneering solar neighborhood that demonstrated how sustainable design could create a thriving community. Its narrow streets, community gardens, and passive solar homes were decades ahead of their time.
